Overview

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen digital representation for endangered languages, VANI is developing a Text-to-Speech (TTS) system for the Idu Mishmi language, spoken in the Dibang Valley region of Arunachal Pradesh.

This initiative aims to create one of the first speech technology tools for Idu Mishmi, enabling the generation of natural-sounding speech from written text. The project involves close collaboration with native speakers and community members, who contribute voice recordings and linguistic insights to ensure cultural and phonetic authenticity.

By combining community knowledge with modern AI techniques, the Idu Mishmi TTS project seeks not only to preserve a language at risk but also to make it accessible in digital spaces — from education and storytelling to language learning tools. It is a step toward empowering the Idu Mishmi community to hear and use their language in the technologies of the future.
